Why Hartley Advisory

What sets this practice apart

After fifteen years of independent practice, certain things remain constant: direct involvement, honest counsel, and a refusal to dress up complexity as a billing strategy.

Experience, not theory

Fifteen years of real delivery means advice grounded in what works — not what looks good on a slide.

Direct access

You work with me personally throughout. No hand-offs, no junior substitutes — consistent senior involvement.

Honest counsel

I will tell you what you need to hear. Clients retain me precisely because I do not tell them what is comfortable if it is wrong.

Measurable outcomes

Every engagement is defined by clear objectives. If we cannot define success, we have not finished scoping.

Proportionate scope

From a single advisory call to a multi-month programme — the model adapts to what you need, not a billing structure.

Absolute discretion

Confidentiality is not a policy — it is a professional standard I hold unconditionally on every engagement.

Biography

Professional background

I began my career in the public sector, spending eight years in roles demanding both analytical rigour and practical delivery — from programme management in central government to operational leadership in large NHS organisations. That foundation gave me a deep understanding of governance, accountability, and delivering in complex, high-stakes environments.

In 2014 I moved into independent consultancy, initially working with a boutique advisory firm before establishing my own practice in 2017. Since then I have worked with a wide range of clients — from FTSE-listed businesses and professional partnerships to start-ups, charities, and executives navigating significant career transitions.

What connects all of my work is a commitment to practical, honest counsel grounded in real-world experience. I am not a generalist offering generic frameworks — I bring specific depth in strategic planning, organisational design, and leadership development, applied to the actual problems clients face.

Outside of client work, I am a trustee of a regional arts charity, a lay member of a professional regulatory panel, and a mentor through a national leadership programme. I believe strongly in giving back to the professions that have shaped my career.

Services

Expert support, scaled to what you actually need

Every engagement is tailored to the specific challenge and context of the client. These categories describe the most common ways I work — scope, format, and duration are always agreed together.

Consulting

Structured consulting engagements

A consulting engagement is a defined piece of work with a clear brief, agreed deliverables, and a fixed timeline — the right model when you have a specific challenge to address.

  • Clear deliverables agreed at the outset — no scope creep
  • Structured methodology adapted to your context
  • Actionable recommendations, not glossy reports
  • Senior-level involvement throughout
Ideal ForOrganisations with a specific, bounded challenge requiring external expertise — typically over four to twelve weeks.

Advisory

Ongoing advisory services

An advisory arrangement gives you ongoing access to an experienced, independent perspective — a trusted sounding board available when decisions are being made, not just when a project is running.

  • Regular structured sessions (monthly or bi-monthly)
  • On-call access between sessions for time-sensitive matters
  • Cumulative understanding that builds over time
  • Honest, confidential counsel with no competing interests
Ideal ForSenior leaders and founders wanting a trusted external perspective as an ongoing resource — via a retained arrangement of three to twelve months.

Strategy

Strategic planning & facilitation

Effective strategy is not a document — it is a shared understanding of direction and priorities, with the discipline to make it real. I facilitate strategy development that earns genuine buy-in.

  • Facilitated away-days and strategic workshops
  • Diagnostic work to surface the real strategic questions
  • Structured prioritisation and decision-making
  • Written strategy with implementation roadmaps
Ideal ForLeadership teams entering a planning cycle, organisations at an inflexion point, or boards needing independent facilitation to reach genuine alignment.

Project Support

Project support & interim capacity

Sometimes what an organisation needs is not advice — it is an additional pair of experienced hands. I provide project support and interim capacity for organisations managing change or a senior capability gap.

  • Programme and project oversight and reporting
  • Stakeholder management and facilitation
  • Short-term interim leadership support
  • Rapid onboarding — minimal briefing time required
Ideal ForOrganisations managing a complex programme, significant change, or a senior capability gap — typically for a defined period of one to six months.

Why most strategic plans fail before they begin — and what to do about it

The most common reason a strategic plan fails is not poor execution, inadequate resources, or a volatile environment — it is that the plan was never truly believed by the people meant to carry it out. This piece examines the conditions for a strategy that sticks.
